Workday Cuts While Recruiting AI Attracts $100M+ in a Single Day
Layoffs at the HCM giant, a flood of recruiting-AI capital, and a labor market softening all hit on the same day — and they're telling the same story.
September 30 arrived with a sharp reminder that HR technology is not immune to the same workforce math it sells software to manage. Workday disclosed in a Form 8-K filed September 29 that it will cut about 2.5% of its workforce — roughly 525 roles, by Seeking Alpha's estimate — concentrated in Product and Technology, alongside office-space reductions and an estimated $65 million to $80 million in charges. On the same day, the ADP National Employment Report showed U.S. private-sector payrolls grew by just 90,000 jobs in September, a notably soft number. The macro and the corporate are pointing the same direction: slower.
The Money
Yet capital keeps moving — just more selectively. Metaview closed a $60M Series C led by Insight Partners, bringing its total funding to $110M. The company, which says more than 7,000 companies hire with it, is pivoting toward an end-to-end agentic recruiting platform and plans to triple headcount from 80 to 250. Separately, Miter — a workforce management platform built specifically for construction — raised a $40M Series B led by Battery Ventures, with Bessemer and Coatue participating, bringing its total to $78M. The Miter raise is worth watching beyond the headline: it signals that industry-vertical HCM is attracting serious growth capital as generic workforce platforms plateau. Early-stage appetite also persists — European startup Ahron pulled in €2.2M to automate HR processes with AI.
Deals and Product
Pearson's acquisition of Workera — terms undisclosed — is the quieter but strategically significant deal of the day. Pearson is buying a Silicon Valley startup built around AI-powered skills verification and enterprise assessments, deepening its play in corporate upskilling at precisely the moment AI-era reskilling budgets are under scrutiny. The Kyle Getsiv public-markets analysis released today gives context: corporate learning is the clearest area of budget pressure in HR SaaS right now, with the sector's median forward revenue multiple at 4.6x — below historical norms — as investors price cash flow over growth.
On the integration side, SAP Community detailed a new career-site connector linking SmartRecruiters with SAP SuccessFactors. Unglamorous, but practically useful for the large share of enterprise HR teams running both systems and tired of a fractured candidate experience. PitchMe also launched SONAR, a web-sourcing and profile-enrichment tool aimed at staffing agencies that sits beside existing ATS or CRM tools rather than replacing them.
Skills, Trust, and the Gap Between Promise and Practice
Phenom and nonprofit Opportunity@Work announced a partnership targeting state government employers with skills-based hiring workflows — a concrete attempt to push credentials-optional hiring into a sector that has been slow to move. Meanwhile, more than half of UK employers report they still don't use AI in recruitment at all, with candidate verification and trust as the primary friction, not technology access.
That gap between availability and adoption has a sharper edge today. Eagle Hill Consulting says HR professionals are still spending significant time on low-value manual tasks despite AI's proliferation. Nvidia's AI agent safety guardrails, flagged by HR Executive, are raising pointed questions about how HR teams govern autonomous AI in workforce workflows. PowerToFly's full pivot — away from diversity talent and toward supplying human expertise for AI model reliability — may be the most candid read on where enterprise AI actually stands.
What we're watching: Whether Workday's restructuring, which it says will "better align team structures with Workday's strategic growth priorities," accelerates or delays its own AI product roadmap — and whether today's 90,000-job ADP print is a blip or the start of a trend that softens HCM demand heading into Q4.
