Lyft to Pay $272.5M to Settle Driver Misclassification Claims

California's Labor Commissioner's Office has reached a $272.5 million settlement with Lyft — the largest wage-and-hour settlement in state history, according to HR Morning — resolving misclassification claims that the company improperly treated drivers as independent contractors and denied them minimum wage, overtime, sick leave, and other protections. The deal covers violations from April 2016 through December 2020 and does not require Lyft to reclassify drivers going forward, with 87% of funds going directly to affected workers.
