Identity fraud, AI audits, and a Gartner reality check dominate a crowded Thursday
From deepfake hires to unproven AI throughput claims, today's news is a stress test for anyone buying HR tech on faith.
Trust is the thread running through Thursday's HR-tech news — trust in who you're hiring, trust in the AI doing the screening, and trust in whether any of this is actually saving money. Spoiler: Gartner says it isn't, yet.
The money
European deep-tech fund Entourage closed a €100M second fund targeting AI, robotics, and deep tech — useful context for anyone tracking where European capital is flowing. Smaller but pointed: Fronted raised €1.7M for global hiring infrastructure, Hungary's Intellihr raised $303K to scale AI recruiting, and Ravical pulled in $17M with an explicit pitch that accounting firms can grow headcount slower by deploying AI. That last one is worth watching — it's a funded bet that professional-services firms will substitute software for people, not just augment them.
The identity and compliance problem
Deel launched Deel Security, a product targeting identity fraud, deepfake candidates, and impersonation across the worker lifecycle — hiring through EOR onboarding. It's a direct response to a real problem: fake hires are no longer theoretical. The company says the product covers continuous verification, though independent validation isn't available yet. Separately, a Pennsylvania federal court allowed an FLSA suit to proceed against Chestnut Hill Hospital over a nurse's unpaid preshift time, finding that quarter-hour clock rounding and attendance automation may have excluded required work from pay. That's a direct warning for any HR team that relies on automated timekeeping without auditing edge cases — particularly where FMLA-protected absences feed into attendance scoring.
The UK's Equality and Human Rights Commission added its own compliance pressure, calling for a ban on asking candidates about salary history or pay expectations, arguing the practice embeds existing pay gaps into new roles. UK recruiting teams using pay-history screening should treat this as directional even before legislation moves.
AI in hiring: throughput claims meet scrutiny
South Korea's SK AX says its new AI recruiting tool assessed 1,800 applicants in six hours — the company says so, neither figure is independently verified, and no pricing or customer detail is available. Xobin launched an "AI Interview Auditor" to make automated interviews more trustworthy, also without pricing or independent validation. Gap Inc. deployed an AI hiring tool for its holiday seasonal push — a named, large-employer case worth watching for outcomes. Meanwhile, Gartner's research, reported by HR Dive, finds that heavy AI investment has not yet produced matching workforce productivity gains. Buying on throughput claims alone, without verified outcomes, is exactly the gap that finding describes.
Phenom launched a Women in Tech Leadership Council focused on AI readiness. The intent is reasonable; whether a council moves the needle is a question for next year's data.
Platforms and procurement
Dayforce opened its agentic HCM platform to public-sector buyers through reseller Carahsoft — a practical procurement route for government HR teams previously blocked by contracting constraints. Chegg Skills and PowerTrain partnered to put 200-plus AI and cybersecurity courses onto the Callisto platform for government and defense L&D buyers. Both moves point to a maturing channel strategy for HR vendors chasing public-sector contracts, where procurement rules matter as much as product features.
What we're watching: How many of those AI-hiring throughput numbers — SK AX's 1,800 interviews, Gap's seasonal tool — come with any outcome data by Q1. Gartner's productivity finding gives buyers a useful benchmark question to ask every vendor in the room.
