AI Rebounding, Payroll Rails, and the Cost of Getting the Workforce Bet Wrong
Companies are learning, expensively, what happens when you replace workers with AI and then need them back.
The SHL survey result buried in today's feed deserves a headline of its own: half of workers who've been replaced by AI say they'd demand a substantial raise to return, and Gartner predicts 30% of AI-displaced workers will in fact be rehired — typically at higher cost. Meanwhile Google is extending voluntary buyouts to Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland to fund AI spending, and Meta is reportedly offering French employees 2.15 months' salary per year of service to leave. The workforce math is getting harder to do in both directions.
The Money
Latin America gets two new bets. Buenos Aires-based Takenos closed a $7M seed extension (total: $12M, co-led by North Island Ventures and Road Capital) to scale stablecoin-based cross-border payroll APIs across 15+ countries by 2027. India's GetWork — a market that rarely makes these roundups — says it has crossed $5M ARR, up 67% since March, and spun its AI hiring unit into a standalone company, Flashfox AI, targeting the UAE, Singapore and the Philippines within 24 months; the company says AI products are now 52% of revenue. Baltimore-based Arena.io closed $4.5M to expand its outcomes-based talent platform, which it says draws on career data from four million people, deeper into public-sector workforce and education systems. Nooks took a structurally different route: $500M in non-dilutive growth capital from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund, intended for enterprise and international expansion alongside a new AI sales assistant called Node.
Payroll Infrastructure Keeps Expanding
Everee added company-level payroll APIs so vertical software platforms — staffing, healthcare, hospitality — can embed full payroll experiences while Everee handles tax, compliance and payments behind the scenes. Takenos is pursuing the same embedded-payroll angle specifically for Latin American cross-border flows. For HR buyers evaluating payroll vendors in fragmented or emerging markets, both moves suggest the real competition is now at the API layer, not the UI.
Compliance Is Still Costly
Three enforcement items landed today. P & B Partitions Inc., a New Jersey drywall contractor, owes $725,000 — $350K in back wages, $350K in liquidated damages, $25K in penalties — after the DOL found it hadn't paid 48 workers for pre-shift wait time. The DOL's position: waiting for employer-arranged transport is compensable work under the FLSA. Schumacher Auto Group will pay $112,500 to settle an EEOC disability discrimination case and must overhaul its training and policies. And an SAP Community post flagged a live technical issue: SAP Note 3413629 appears to break the HR_READ_INFOTYPE function module in custom programs, affecting ESS, Fiori and HR Renewal environments. Teams running post-upgrade payroll or HR reads should check their systems.
Measuring Work Differently
A podcast discussion between Mike Sullivan and Vinay Gidwaney argues headcount is the wrong metric once AI agents join a team — HR should instead track task allocation, individual capacity change and where that freed capacity goes. It's a reasonable framing, and it connects directly to what CGI Federal and AWS are building: a Super Intelligence Workforce Development Coalition offering micro-credentials and certificates, with the University of Tennessee as the first participating school, explicitly designed to prepare workers for hybrid human-AI teams. Geographic Solutions says more than 170,000 users in Georgia and Texas have already run roughly 2.5 million job-search activities through its AI-assisted VOS Sapphire platform, the company reports.
What we're watching: Whether the "AI rebounding" pattern SHL identified becomes a measurable cost line in workforce planning — and whether any HR-tech vendor builds a tool to price that risk before the layoff decision is made.
