ADP's Big Day, Agentic Everything, and a W-2 Deadline You Can't Miss
ADP dominated Wednesday's news cycle, but the real story is agentic AI moving from conference buzz to payroll, comp, and compliance product lines simultaneously.
If you needed one word to describe October 28 in HR tech, it's agentic. The term showed up in product launches, analyst reports, conference floor dispatches, and Singapore job ads — where mentions surged 460%, according to DANAMIC. At HR Tech 2026, observers reported AI agents have become a baseline expectation, not a differentiator. The differentiator, per those on the show floor, is now data strategy. That gap between AI promise and data readiness is exactly where vendors are placing their bets today.
The Money and ADP's Double Header
ADP had an unusually loud Wednesday. First, it reported fiscal Q1 2027 results: revenue up 6% year over year to $5.5 billion. Then, in the same news cycle, it announced "PNC Payroll by ADP" — an embedded payroll product that pulls ADP's payroll, HR, benefits, time-tracking, insurance, and retirement tools directly into PNC Bank's digital banking platform. The target: PNC's small-business customers, a segment that overlaps with the roughly 900,000 small businesses ADP already serves, the company says. Embedding payroll inside a bank's cash management workflow is a meaningful UX bet — if it works, switching costs rise sharply for those customers.
Agentic AI: From Slides to Ship
Several vendors pushed agentic features into actual product this week. SAP SuccessFactors' second-half 2026 release adds an HR Operations Assistant for pay equity analysis and an HR Performance & Goals Assistant with bias detection and real-time calibration — both framed around giving managers evidence, not just dashboards. Dayforce is introducing agentic features across scheduling and payroll workflows. Docebo launched two new products — Docebo Knowledge and Docebo Agents — to unify skills intelligence with AI agent capabilities in its learning platform. And Everstage launched Eva, an agentic assistant for incentive compensation that the company says turns commission analysis into plain-language task assignment against live payout rules.
McKinsey added fuel: agentic AI could cut banks' transaction monitoring workload by up to 50%, the firm says — a figure that, if directionally right, has obvious implications for HR and finance operations teams evaluating where to pilot autonomous AI first.
Leadership Moves
Three appointments worth tracking: CompTIA named Casey Welch chief product officer to steer its AI-era workforce readiness portfolio. Specialty chemicals firm Kraton brought in Brian Rea as CHRO. And Takeda named Jimmy Zhang interim head of HR for China — a market where AI-readiness hiring pressure is accelerating.
Compliance Corner
U.S. payroll teams: don't let this one slip. Starting with 2026 W-2s — due February 1, 2027 — employers must separately report qualified overtime pay and cash tips using new IRS Box 12 codes (TT for FLSA overtime premiums, TP for employee-reported tips). Reporting was optional in 2025 under transition relief. It is no longer optional.
What we're watching: The iCIMS/Kyle & Co. research linking AI readiness to hiring performance, and the AI Hiring Report's finding that only 4% of AI specialist job postings require evidence of a shipped AI system — together, they suggest companies are buying AI aggressively while still struggling to hire people who can actually deliver it.
