ADP has expanded ADP API Central with a new layer of AI-native infrastructure designed to move enterprise workforce automation from pilot to production. Announced on October 22, 2026, from the company's Roseland, NJ headquarters, the update introduces Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and AI tooling that allow organizations to connect the AI agent of their choice to trusted, role-controlled workforce data — without rebuilding integrations from scratch.

At the core of the release is the principle of 'bring your own AI agent.' Rather than mandating a proprietary assistant, ADP API Central now acts as a secure data and action layer that any conforming AI agent can query through natural language. Employees can ask questions about payroll, compensation, time-off balances, and benefits coverage; managers can initiate onboarding workflows, review timecards, or handle PTO requests — all from within whatever AI-powered interface their organization has standardized on.

Security architecture receives equal billing in the announcement. Access is governed by Mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) encryption, OAuth 2.0 authentication, and configurable data entitlements that restrict what any given agent can see or do. This framing directly addresses a known enterprise objection to agentic AI: the risk of exposing sensitive workforce data to insufficiently governed AI systems.

The inclusion of MCP servers is the most architecturally significant element. Model Context Protocol, an emerging open standard for supplying contextual data to large language models, positions ADP workforce data as a structured, query-able context source for third-party AI agents and co-pilots — a meaningful step toward interoperability across the broader HR tech ecosystem.

'The next wave of enterprise AI is about connecting intelligence to action,' said Anthony Maggio, VP and GM of ADP Marketplace, according to the company's press release. Isabel Espina, VP of Product Development for Shared Products at ADP, added that API Central gives developers 'the APIs, MCP servers, tools and support they need to turn ideas into intelligent solutions faster.'

All capabilities are described as available today. Pricing details have not been disclosed. More information is available at adp.com/apicentral.

Why it matters

The addition of MCP server support is more than an incremental feature drop — it signals ADP's intent to become a foundational data layer for the agentic AI era in HR. By opening workforce data to any conforming AI agent via a standardized protocol, ADP lowers the switching cost for enterprises already invested in specific AI platforms (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, Salesforce Agentforce, or custom LLM stacks) while keeping security and governance firmly on the employer's terms. For HR tech vendors and ecosystem developers, this raises the bar: workforce platforms that cannot offer equivalent agent-ready data access risk being bypassed as enterprises build AI-first employee experiences.
