Why the whole list fell
HRTechChina points to two pressures arriving together in early October: the US 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.34%, a 24-year high, and US payrolls grew by only 29,000 in September against expectations of 90,000, with unemployment rising to 4.2%. A "low-hire, low-fire" labor market weighs directly on recruiting and staffing businesses (Recruit, BOSS Zhipin, Randstad, Robert Half), while higher discount rates make investors stricter about whether software growth justifies HCM and payroll valuations (Workday, Paychex, Paycom, Paylocity).
Company notes
- Recruit Holdings stays far ahead at #1. HRTechChina highlights Indeed FutureWorks 2026 and its "Human Advantage" theme: Indeed moving from job search and advertising toward the full hiring loop, from matching and outreach to assessment and the hiring decision.
- ADP (−9.3%) expanded its strategic partnership with AWS on Sept 8, making AWS its strategic cloud provider for rebuilding payroll, HR and compliance workflows on generative and agentic AI infrastructure. It also nominated David W. Kenny (formerly IBM Watson and IBM Cloud) and Nancy McKinstry (Wolters Kluwer) to its board.
- Workday (−6.2%) launched Workday Total Benefits on Sept 24, bringing health, wealth and wellbeing into one experience answered by its Self-Service Agent, and named Sarah Kennedy Ellis, from Google Cloud and Google Workspace, as CMO.
- Paychex is the month's sharpest contrast: −21.2% even though FY2027 Q1 (reported Sept 23) showed revenue of $1.6305B (+6%), operating income of $619.2M (+14%) and adjusted operating margin up from 40.7% to 42.0%. It also launched WISE Hire, an agentic recruiting solution.
- Paycom (−6.9%) slipped back to around the $10B mark with no new major catalyst in September.
- Paylocity moved up to #6 even though its value fell 7.4%. It shipped Recruiting Agents, an Answer & Insight Agent, and Pay and Time Agents that flag missing employee data, timecard errors and payroll anomalies before payroll is submitted.
- BOSS Zhipin (−14.7%) appointed long-time CTO Tao Zhang as Rotating President through Aug 31, 2027. Its annual ADS dividend ($0.510 per ADS) went ex-dividend on Sept 28, a mechanical factor in the month-end price.
- Randstad (−17.0%) fell from #6 to #8 with no quarterly report in the month; temporary-help employment in the US fell by about 10,900 jobs in September.
- The Adecco Group held up best (−4.5%). On Sept 15 it announced the rollout of Salesforce Agentforce Coworker to 40+ countries, reaching about 27,000 employees, with agentic AI already in recruitment workflows in 10 countries that represent about half of revenue.
- Persol Holdings entered at #10 on relative moves, not gains: its share price fell from ¥301.20 to ¥279.40. In September it launched a Cross Deep Tech Fund, published AI Product Development Guidelines, and wrote "technology-driven HR services company" into its mid-term strategy.
- Outside the TOP10, Korn Ferry completed its acquisition of AMS on Sept 1 and reported Q1 FY2027 fee revenue of $756.5M (+7%).
Concentration
Recruit, ADP, Workday and Paychex together are worth about $337.9B, 89.3% of the TOP10 total, and Recruit and ADP alone account for about 68.1%. The scarce assets in HR capital markets are still global talent networks, payroll infrastructure and systems of record, not a single AI feature.

Public HR companies are the clearest scoreboard for whether AI is paying off in HR. This month the market marked down even companies with good quarters (Paychex) and active agent launches (Paylocity, Workday), which means vendors' AI claims are being judged on revenue, margin and productivity rather than announcements. That valuation pressure tends to flow through to pricing, M&A appetite and how hard vendors push AI add-ons to buyers.
