NYC Local Law 144: AI Is No Defense, $1,500 Fines [2026]

New York City's DCWP, Commission on Human Rights and Taxi and Limousine Commission issued a joint enforcement policy stating that employers cannot avoid legal responsibility by blaming an algorithm or AI tool. The city's interagency letter says the laws apply whether or not AI assisted the decision. The item centers on NYC Local Law 144 of 2021, which governs automated employment decision tools used in hiring and has been enforced by DCWP since July 5, 2023.
