IRS Shuts Down FIRE E-Filing Nov. 19: Apply for IRIS Now
The IRS will stop accepting returns through its FIRE system at 3 p.m. ET on Nov. 19, and the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) takes over e-filing from the 2027 filing season for 1099s, 1098s and W-2Gs. Companies that file directly need a separate IRIS Transmitter Control Code. IRS Publication 5903 says applications typically take up to 45 business days, so a late-October application could run into early January ahead of the Feb. 1 deadline for Forms 1099-NEC. W-2s go to the Social Security Administration and are not affected.
