California Raises Repeat Pay Data Reporting Penalty to $1,000 per Employee

California's SB 1237, signed by Gov. Newsom, raises the maximum penalty for repeat failures to file mandatory pay data reports from $200 to $1,000 per employee — meaning a 1,000-employee employer could face up to $1 million for a second missed filing, according to HR Morning. The higher cap takes effect January 1, 2027, with the May 2027 filing deadline as the first at-risk submission for private employers with 100 or more payroll or labor-contractor workers.
